The Wellness Post: Happy Holidays: Rest, recharge and prepare for New academic year

As the academic year comes to an end, I would like to congratulate each one of you for your hard work, resilience, and commitment throughout the whole academic year. Every assignment completed, challenge overcame, and lesson learned is a testament to your determination and growth.

The holiday is a well-deserved opportunity to rest, recharge, and prepare for the next chapter of your academic journey. While taking time to relax is important, this period also presents valuable opportunities for personal, professional, and community development.

Many of you will be participating in internships to gain practical experience, build professional networks, and develop skills that will shape your future careers. Others will be implementing important projects, demonstrating the spirit of service by creating positive change in your communities. Both paths are meaningful and reflect the values of leadership, responsibility, and social impact that define any student who is committed to a bright future.

Beyond the activities you have planned, this holiday is also a valuable time to pause and reflect on your academic journey and future career aspirations. Take some time to ask yourself: Am I moving in the direction of the career I aspire to build? What skills, experiences, or knowledge do I still need to develop? Are there additional steps I can take during this holiday to prepare myself for future opportunities?

This reflection may inspire you to engage in activities that complement your academic studies and career goals, such as learning a new skill, reading relevant materials, improving your professional profile, networking with people in your field of interest, exploring mentorship opportunities, or gaining practical experiences that strengthen your career pathway.

As you embark on your holiday, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda encourages you to prioritise your mental and emotional well-being alongside your personal and professional goals.

Here are a few reminders to help you make the most of this period:

1.     Allow yourself time to rest, sleep well, be physically active, and engage in activities that bring you peace.

2.     Spend quality time with family, friends, and supportive people in your life. Positive social connections are an important source of strength and resilience.

3.     Whether you are completing an internship, running a holiday project, learning a new skill, volunteering, or preparing for the next year, let your holiday contribute to your personal growth.

4.     You do not have to accomplish everything at once. Celebrate small achievements, learn from challenges, and recognise that growth is a continuous journey.

5.     Protect your physical and emotional well-being by avoiding risky behaviours and remember to seek support whenever needed. If you experience emotional distress or need someone to talk to, do not hesitate to request for sypport through the University of Rwandad Psychosocial Support Online System.

We wish you a safe and productive holidays.
