The Wellness Post: Self-Discovery: Getting to Know Yourself

Self-discovery is the process of learning more about yourself; your values, emotions, strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, needs, and aspirations. It involves asking meaningful questions and  becoming more aware of what shapes your thoughts, decisions, and relationships. It helps you make choices based on who you are rather than simply following what others expect from you.

Self-discovery helps you pause and ask: “What do I actually want for my life?”

When you understand yourself better, you can make better decisions about your studies, friendships, relationships, career, and future.

Self-discovery is a journey

To start your self-discovery journey, take a moment to reflect on the following:

1. What am I good at?
Think beyond academics. Are you a good listener, organizer, problem-solver, communicator, leader, or encourager?

2. What makes me feel alive?
What activities make you lose track of time or leave you feeling fulfilled?

3. What are my values?
What matters most to you: family, faith, honesty, freedom, service, achievement, creativity, stability, or something else?

4. What are my weaknesses?
Knowing your weaknesses does not mean judging yourself. It helps you identify areas where you can improve.

5. What influences my decisions?
Are you making choices because you genuinely want them, or because you are afraid of disappointing others? your parents, friends, or society?

6. What kind of person do I want to become?
Your degree is important, but so is the person you become while pursuing it.

You do not need to have all the answers right now. It is okay to change your mind. You may discover a new interest, realize that a particular career is not for you, develop new values, or discover strengths you did not know you had.

A Simple exercise to better understand yourself

Take a piece of paper and complete these sentences:

  • I am proud of myself because…
  • I feel happiest when…
  • People often come to me when they need…
  • Something I would like to improve about myself is…
  • Something I am afraid of is…
  • One thing I have learned from my past is…
  • My three most important values are…
  • If I were not afraid of failing, I would…
  • The kind of person I want to become is…
  • One small step I can take this week is…

You don't have to compare your journey with someone else's. Your peer may seem to have everything figured out, but you cannot see their whole story.

Give yourself permission to explore, learn, grow, and change. Self-discovery is not about finding a perfect version of yourself, it is about understanding yourself and intentionally becoming the person you want to be.
